Description
Mannitol
For suspected mannitol malabsorption, particularly in vegetarians.
Mannitol is used as a sugar substitute and occurs naturally in some vegetables e.g. mushroom, cauliflower
When bacteria digest food, they produce gas. These gasses pass through your intestinal walls into your bloodstream. Some of this gas ends up in your lungs, and you breathe them out.
The test collects samples of your breath over a short period of time.
The breath samples are collected, sent to our pathology partners and get tested for the levels of Hydrogen and Methane you have exhaled.
These levels tell us whereabouts bacteria are fermenting in your intestinal system, and how much gas they are creating.
